Who are we talking about?

“Please what?” is whispered into his ear. There is an accent he can’t place and it fascinates him. Like the stranger is a puzzle he desperately needs to solve.

How did it all start?

Sometimes Dan feels that Fernando is his journey, and he figures that all journeys have an end, so he keeps the anticipation close to his heart, as if that might cushion the blow when he gets there.

We actually have no idea how parka_girl had the foresight to write her story Clarity in August 2006 when Dan and Fernando arguably had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with each other. And as far as we know it was the only story in existence about the two of them as a pairing until Fernando’s move from Atlético to Liverpool in the summer of 2007.
Naturally he was immediately integrated into the team in slash fandom, as far as we know most often with the captain as Fernando and Stevie had obviously quickly developed a liking towards each other on the pitch. It didn’t take long though until people started to see the potential of Fernando with Dan, and we know that there had to be other stories at the time already, but the earliest we could find with them on the same team was written by jumping_down called Spanglish.
From that moment on, the pairing gained momentum and followers and survived even what could have been a killing blow in January 2011.

What’s to like?

Everyone always said they would get along like a house on fire. They were so similar; tall, freckled with inky decorations. Everyone was right, they did get along, but it wasn’t because of the similarities between them.

The most basic reason, as always, is looks. There are arguably not many people who don’t find Fernando Torres good looking if not hot, which is probably the reason why he has been slashed with all the world and his brother. Maybe the face simply is too innocent to not want to corrupt him a little (or a lot). Who knows. And then there’s his ass (that posed a nice alternative to fangirl over when the person attached to it fell out of favour). With Daniel Agger it’s harder to pin down. For some it’s the tattoos, for some the freckles, for some the smile, for some simply everything.
A fact that definitely contributes to the attraction of the pairing is that in a lot of aspects, they’re a study in contrasts. Glamourous striker and unobtrusive defender matching how Fernando is in the spotlight so often while Dan shies away from it. It makes for a very interesting dynamic while on the other hand they have enough similarities to actually work. They’re both usually quiet and you could say even guarded, of the same age, and both sport the characteristic and often mentioned freckles and tattoos. Even their first children were born in the space of exactly three months.
What many people have already noted is that, for most of us, there is (almost) no setting/plot/situation that they wouldn’t fit into, they’re versatile enough to satisfy even the most adventurous of writers and readers. Daniel can pull off bad boy just as well as shy and insecure, Fernando can be angel and devil (sometimes at the same time). But most importantly to many of us it feels like they both need someone that can be their equal, that can talk back at them when they need it, with whom they can be childish, with whom they can be serious, that can keep them grounded, with whom they can be cute and affectionate as well as rough and uncontrolled. They just have to complement each other and be able to challenge them each day anew. And because they’re both different as well as alike it seems as if they can be just that.
In the end maybe you could simply say that they seem as if they both have empty spaces and insecurities that the other fits into perfectly, or is able to assuage. Fernando is (was?) this high flying golden boy, but he needs to stay grounded, needs to be reminded that he’s just human and that’s okay, and Dan is very grounded, maybe too grounded, and needs to be reminded that he’s special, that he’s more than average.
In two words: perfect fit.

Instead he’d taken his time, slowed things down, careful, careful, so fucking careful, terrified of hurting Fernando, of frightening him, hell bent on proving to him that he’d been a fool to wait so long for something so good, and…

Desperate, so unbelievably desperate, to please Fernando and ensure that the Spaniard enjoyed every second.

Community

For just the fraction of a moment Dan’s gaze flickered over and locked with Fernando’s, and in that moment he knew that everything had fallen into place. That they both were thinking the same.
This is it. Just as we are meant to be.
